Introduction to Rubber-Coated Rollers

2025-10-23

The drum, a cylindrical component, is divided into driving and driven rollers and is used in various conveying systems such as printing machines, digital printers, papermaking and packaging machinery, etc. It is mostly made of stainless steel, cast steel, or solid forged alloy steel cores.

The rubber-coated drum is an important component and part of the belt transportation system. The rubber coating on the drum can effectively improve the operation status of the transportation system, protect the metal drum from wear, prevent the slipping of the conveyor belt, enable the drum and the belt to rotate synchronously, and thus ensure the efficient and high-capacity operation of the belt. The rubber coating on the drum can also effectively prevent sliding friction between the drum and the belt, reduce the adhesion of materials on the drum surface, and thereby minimize the deviation and wear of the belt.

It is widely used in industries such as steel, metallurgy, coal, cement, power generation, fertilizer, grain storage, and ports.

Coated material

Natural rubber, nitrile rubber, chloroprene rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, polyurethane, etc. can be used.

Technology

The rubber coating drum technology can be divided into two types. The traditional rubber coating methods, such as hot vulcanization rubber coating technology, mainly involve vulcanizing the rubber with the drum in a vulcanization tank to ensure the bonding strength between the rubber coating panel and the drum. The second type is the cold vulcanization rubber coating technology, which uses a special cold vulcanization method to directly bond the drum and the rubber coating panel together. This can be done for on-site rubber coating and underground rubber coating, etc. This technology is more advanced and also significantly reduces labor costs.

Manufacturing process: Generally, in terms of the main shaft of the drum, depending on the loading conditions, it can be divided into the following two types:

1) The mandrel only bears bending moments, such as the shaft of the reversing drum assembly;

2) The rotating shaft simultaneously bears bending moment and torque, such as the shaft of the transmission drum assembly; the material of the shaft is generally rolled or forged carbon steel or alloy steel. The common material is medium carbon steel, and 45# steel is commonly used. For shafts subjected to large forces and with limited dimensions, as well as certain special requirements, alloy steel can be used. The selected material is 40Cr. The material of the shaft usually needs to undergo heat treatment or surface strengthening treatment to improve its mechanical properties and wear resistance, etc. At normal temperatures, the elastic modulus of alloy steel and carbon steel differs very little, so using alloy steel cannot increase the stiffness of the shaft. The material of the shaft is generally subjected to quenching and tempering treatment. For the transmission drum assembly, when the shaft strength indicators do not meet the requirements, it can also be selected to undergo quenching and tempering treatment together, and be checked according to the allowable stress for symmetrical cyclic bending.

The technical requirements for the tube skin design are:

When the tube skin is curled, it must be done in the same direction as the steel plate's rolling.

2) The misalignment at the joint should not exceed 1 millimeter.

3) After the drum is covered with rubber, the longitudinal welds must undergo ultrasonic or X-ray inspection:

The ultrasonic testing was conducted at 10%, and the welds met the standards of level two.

② Radiographic testing starts from one end and covers 20% of the total length. If the weld meets the national standard level 2, if it fails the test, the testing length will be doubled. If it still fails after doubling, the entire length will be tested until it meets the requirements.

4) The roundness tolerance of the rolled cylinder should not exceed 0.5. 5) Material: Q235 steel, with a yield strength of 235 Newtons per square meter. For medium-sized drum sets and light-duty drum sets, when the outer diameter of the hub is greater than 220mm, cast steel should be used; for light-duty drum sets, when the outer diameter of the hub is less than 220mm, hot-rolled round steel should be adopted, which should comply with national standards.
